The Edit option brings up a text box that is handy to enter text to be translated.

Right-click on the pop-up and you can copy the text, image to the clipboard. When you use the 'Capture' option, a small window appears in the top left corner of the screen, it lists some actions you can take using hotkeys. You can optionally enable auto-corrections, this requires autocorrect language to be installed from the settings. Use it to switch to a different 'Recognize' and 'Translate' language. The program has an advanced capture mode to use it draw a box around the text using the right-mouse button and you'll see a toolbar appear on the screen. You can also use the application to translate text (instead of text from images). It displays the content of the text in the original language, and its translation. Let go of the mouse button, and a small pop-up appears below the selection. Use it to mark the area of the image that has the text that you want to translate. This allows you to draw a box on the screen, just like taking a screenshot of a region. Right-click on the tray icon and select capture, or use the hotkey Ctrl + Alt + Z.

Don't forget to set the translation language on this page, the program is set to use Russian by default, you can select a different language from the drop-down menu,Â e.g. Once you have done that, switch to the 'Translator' tab, enable the service by clicking the check box next to it, and click on the Apply and Ok buttons. if you want to translate German to English, set German as the recognition language. Repeat the above steps to set the recognition language, which is the language you want content to be translated from, e.g. Next, click on the Apply Updates button, and the status of the service should now read 'Up to date'.

Right-click on the service's name and select the install option. The first thing to do is select the translation service that you want to use, you can choose from Google, Bing, DeepL, Baidu, Papago and Yandex. Next, hit the 'check now' button in the top right corner of the screen.

When you run the program for the first time, the program will display a couple of notifications which warn you that no recognition languages are available, and that you should install some to get started.

The software is powered by the open source Tesseract OCR engine. ScreenTranslator is an easy to use OCR program that can quickly translate words from images to text format. You'll need to rely on OCR (optical character recognition). But as said, we can only continuously test our own engine and open source ones (like Tesseract), for legal reasons.But when it comes to translating content from images, it's not as readily available. We constantly track our own accuracy on internally developed benchmarks, because frankly the ones available online (also for research purposes) are very bad. Anecdotical experience (mostly coming from customers of ours who, themselves, compare our internal engine with alternatives) seemed to point to the fact that most of the competition have rather stable service, so quality likely didn't evolve much in the last two years, but we can't be sure of course. Our company has dedicated teams to evaluate competition products, so we once asked them (a couple of years ago), and could only look at aggregated, anonymized results. Plus, since we develop a competing product, any 'deep look' into the competition might be seen as reverse engineering it, and our company is very careful to avoid such problems. Most EULAs explicitly prevent users to benchmark results, and we don't want to incur into any such risk. And for things like 'search contents of a book' it's basically perfect already. When I say 'pretty poor' I mean: 'with respect to the state-of-the-art', of course it's still enormously better than what was the state-of-the-art before deep learning came into the picture, roughly a decade ago. The only domain where Tesseract is competitive is for perfect 'black text on white paper', it gives pretty poor performance when dealing with colored, distorted text, or even strong page structure effects (tables, etc.). aside from Google, solutions by Azure, Amazon, Abbyy, Nuance, Cloudmersive, etc., as well as our internal product of course, which is not available externally), and they are (almost) all significantly better on Tesseract. Google OCR has definitely much higher accuracy and is significantly faster (basically always taking 1s for inference, while Tesseract can easily take 10s or more for dense pages). Google OCR is definitely not the same as Tesseract, although it's true that Tesseract is maintained by Google.
